“Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point.”

“Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point.” โ€” Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 5 · How It Works
Where it comes from

From the opening of Chapter 5 โ€” the passage read aloud at the start of thousands of meetings every day, just before the Twelve Steps are listed.

Today’s reflection

Most of us tried moderation, geography changes, and willpower-only long before we tried surrender. Those were the half measures. This line isnโ€™t a scolding โ€” itโ€™s a relief. It says you can stop negotiating. Standing at the turning point simply means being done bargaining with the thing thatโ€™s beating you. Today, notice one place youโ€™re still holding back โ€œa little,โ€ and consider what letting go of that last reservation might feel like.

Frequently asked questions

Las Vegas Recovery: Common Questions

What types of treatment are available in Las Vegas?
Las Vegas offers comprehensive treatment options including inpatient/residential treatment (24/7 care for 30-90 days), outpatient treatment (attend during day, return home), intensive outpatient programs (IOP, 3-5 days per week), and partial hospitalization programs (PHP, structured daytime treatment).
How long does addiction treatment take?
Treatment duration varies by program: detox (3-10 days), inpatient (28-90 days), IOP (8-12 weeks), and outpatient (3-6 months). Many Las Vegas facilities offer flexible program lengths tailored to individual needs. Aftercare and support group participation is recommended ongoing.
What therapies are used in Las Vegas treatment centers?
Las Vegas treatment centers commonly use evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR for trauma, motivational interviewing, family therapy, group therapy, and holistic approaches like yoga and mindfulness meditation.
Can I work while in treatment?
It depends on the program type. Inpatient treatment requires full-time residential commitment. Outpatient and IOP programs in Las Vegas are designed to accommodate work schedules, with evening and weekend sessions available at many facilities.
How do I find the right recovery program in Las Vegas?
Consider the type of treatment needed (detox, inpatient, outpatient, sober living), insurance coverage, location preferences, and specialized programs. Browse directory listings in Las Vegas and call providers to confirm current availability, services, and payment options.
Do facilities in Las Vegas accept insurance?
Many treatment centers and detox facilities in Las Vegas accept major insurance plans including Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. Sober living homes typically require private pay but some partner with treatment centers for covered clinical components.
